2.1 Badger Fencing Construction
Badger fencing can be erected in two different manners. The method chosen will generally depend on the application. If the badger fence is part of a permanent project, such as along a new road or housing development, the fence will generally be based upon post and rail fencing. This is the design favoured by the highways agency, one of the largest customers for badger fencing and as such is the unofficial gold standard in badger fencing. If the works are more temporary in nature then the badger fence will often be based upon a strained post and wire design. In either case the key features of the badger fence are as follows.

• A wire mesh fence is used to create the barrier portion of the fence. This can be weld mesh or chain link, but the most commonly used is a woven wire mesh. This provides flexibility and strength whilst remaining a relatively affordable choice. Weld mesh offers little flexibility and is about twice the cost of woven mesh, and whilst chain link is comparable on price to woven mesh, it does not offer the same level of strength. The gauge and apertures in the mesh should reflect the strength and tenacity of a badger when excluded from its normal territory.
• The badger fencing wire mesh is partially buried in the ground to prevent badgers from burrowing underneath it. Normally the mesh is buried in a 300mm deep trench with a further 300mm running horizontally along the base of the trench to create and underlap.
• The badger fence may also be topped by a number of strands of barbed wire.

When constructing a badger fence, either post and rail or post and wire, it is necessary to set the supporting structure in the base of the trench. This effectively increases the height of the fence, consequently when planning a badger fence it is necessary to allow for an increased materials spec and cost. The most commonly used form of mesh for badger fencing is approx 1600mm high. This allows for 600mm underground and 1000mm above ground. This when topped with barbed wire is generally considered high enough to exclude badgers from a site, but in some cases, for example where soils are very light, or where a higher degree of certainty of exclusion is required, it may be necessary to increase the height of the mesh to allow for greater depth of burial and above ground height. Consequently 2000 and 2400mm high woven mesh fences are available.
